GEORGE VRANESH (Minnesota 1926 - New York 2014)

SANDPOINT, 1963

Oil on canvas 40 x 50 inches
(115 x 127 cm.)

Vranesh drew inspiration from personal experiences and the teachings of Ozenfant and Hofmann, using simplification of forms to its essential qualities, contrasts of color and the "push and pull" concept to create depth and movement in his artwork. Influenced by Will Barnet and the Indian Space Painters, he incorporated Native American art into his exploration of abstraction and surrealism. During the summers from 1959 to 1965, Vranesh worked on a salmon cannery ship and documented his travels, which inspired his Alaskan Horizon series. Praised for his aerial perspective, these large landscapes, including "Sandpoint" from 1963, are considered his strongest works and were showcased at the 10/4 Group gallery. "Sandpoint" reflects his journey to Alaska, with the city being a starting point for his river travels.
